SPECIAL TO THE MIAMI HERALD
Sometimes in life you really need a win. Saturday’s couldn’t have come sooner for Lance Irvine, captain of the Young Guns fishing team. With a winning weight of 129.86 pounds, the team caught a heavy purse — a total of $45,520 — and first place in the 2012 Pompano Beach Mecury/SeaVee Saltwater Slam.
Irvine’s son Hunter has been dealing with a medical condition, and taking the day to be out on the water turned into a success and a memory that will last forever.
“My son has some tumors in his brain,” Irvine said. “It was important to have my son onboard with me. We had a phenomenal day.”
They couldn’t have picked a better day to be onboard Young Guns. The team racked up top-place finishes in seven categories — which helped increase the prize winnings — including the KDW (kingfish, dolphin and wahoo), jackpot, top angler, heaviest fish and first-place boat.
The winning catch included the heaviest of the day, a 69.44-pound wahoo, plus three kings and a dolphin.
“I have never seen a fish take off like that. It burned up 600 yards of line,” Irvine said. “I have won over $200,000 fishing in tournaments, but [this] felt like my first real tournament win.”
The Saltwater Slam is the second portion of the three-part Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit and the anglers in Saturday’s tournament were fishing to stay in the third portion, the Saltwater Showdown in August.
There were 88 teams and nearly 500 anglers Saturday, but after this weekend only the top 75 boats will compete for the Showdown Crown.
Second was the crew of Flight Plan, skippered by Casey Hunt, which had a total weight of 113.87 pounds. This puts the team in first overall; the team also took second in the Saltwater Shootout.

Young Guns Fishing Team 2010 Season
Lance Irvine fishing with his son Houston, brother Max Irvine, Freddy Morrison, Max Soto and Charlie Fredrich, on the Young Guns, the Irvine’s Mercury powered Fountain, also started the day fishing way north of Hillsboro Inlet. This team has done well in the past in Pompano, winning over $100,000 in 2007. Lance told me that they ran up to the Juno ledge where he had heard of several decent fish caught earlier in the week. They were able to catch some bonito and a couple 20 pound kingfish but nothing bigger. About 11:30 Irvine decided to move further north to an area east of Jupiter inlet where they put up a kite and with an offshore breeze drifted east. At around 1:00 the fish turned on and they caught twelve nice kings including their 40.49 pound smoker that ate a goggle eye fished on a kite in 86 feet of water. Their big fish along with three other kings would earn the Young Guns seventh place in the tournament and a check for $7500. Houston would take home the Top SKA Junior award as well as the $500 Mercury Scholarship check that goes to the highest finishing SKA junior fishing in a Mercury powered boat. Lance, who owns Atlantic Boat Rentals in Pompano has fished SKA events for the past several years, is on the Mercury Pro Team and is also sponsored by Raymarine.
